The KC Twirlers, Feature Twirler(s), and Drum Major are integral units of the Kilgore College Marching “Ranger” Band. Auditions for these auxiliary units are generally held on the first Saturday in May, at Masters Gymnasium on the Kilgore College campus.  Auditions commence with an orientation meeting of all of the candidates at 8:30 am. Auditions are open to the public.


Judges
Judges for the Auxiliary unit auditions for the Kilgore College Band will be three to five Twirling/Dance Teachers from the East Texas Area. The actual number of candidates selected for Feature Twirler, Majorette, & Drum Major is determined at the sole discretion of the judges based on their professional evaluation of the strength and number of candidates. The decision of the judges at the audition is final and absolute.

Feature Twirler
Candidates for Feature Twirler will audition first, at 1:30 pm.  Each candidate for Feature Twirler should have a feature routine prepared which will exhibit the candidates proficiency at feature twirling. Candidates for feature twirler should exhibit outstanding ability for collegiate level feature twirling based on the following criteria:

  • showmanship
  • control of baton
  • variety
  • speed
  • tricks
  • accuracy

Majorettes
Candidates for KC Twirlers will be taught an audition routine during the morning session. The actual audition will commence after the Feature Twirler audition, at about 2:30 pm. Candidates for KC Twirlers should exhibit outstanding ability for collegiate level twirling based on the following criteria:

  • mastery of audition routine learned during the morning session
  • control and mastery of standard baton twirling fundamentals
  • posture and presence during performance
  • showmanship

Drum Major
Candidates for Drum Major will audition at the conclusion of the KC Twirler audition. In the event that an incoming freshman student is selected as Drum Major, then that student may retain the position as Drum Major during his/her Sophomore year without further audition, if desired. Candidates for Drum Major should exhibit outstanding ability as a collegiate level Drum Major based on the following criteria:

  • majorette audition routine (where applicable)
  • verbal and whistle commands
  • posture and presence
  • command and control of the baton
  • vocal projection
  • showmanship
  • rhythm/conducting

Eligibility for Tryouts
It is recommended that candidates trying out for the twirling line, feature twirler, and/or Drum Major be in good standing with their High School Band Program and have been enrolled in band their entire senior year. The candidate may provide a letter of qualification verifying their enrollment and status. Please attach this letter to your candidate information form and return it to the KC Band Office. If a candidate is a returning member of the KC Twirling Line, this information will be provided by the KC Band Director.
